How I Became a Flosser!

Everyone knows that flossing is an essential part of our oral health. It removes food debris from the nooks and crannies of our teeth which is often impossible to reach via toothbrush or mouthwash, and keeps bacteria from breeding between teeth and on your gums while also preventing plaque from building up.

You’ve likely heard it before and already know how important flossing is for your overall oral health. The question is: why is it often so low on our priority list, and how can we change this?

A great piece of advice when it comes to flossing is to create a routine that will remind you to do it consistently. Here’s a secret: start small.

If you haven’t flossed in a while, whether it be a few weeks, a few months, or even a few years, that’s okay. Everyone needs to start somewhere, and you always have the opportunity to create a new routine for the betterment of your oral health.

Starting small is really what worked for me. At first, I picked one day a week when I would always floss. We always recommend Sunday to our patients, as you usually have free time that day, and it’s also a great way start to the week. Whatever day you pick, start by consistently flossing on that day, until it becomes a habit. Then once you’ve mastered that, add another day — maybe Wednesday — and continue until you’ve reached the ideal schedule for you.

Consistency is important and creating routines is a crucial component of your oral health. This is why starting slowing and working on creating a routine is better than flossing everyday for a week and then stopping for a few months. You will find that you will begin to notice the difference in your mouth after you’ve flossed, and you will start to enjoy the clean feeling.

Another top tip: when you first begin, don’t worry about a mirror. Often individuals find it boring to stand in front of a mirror, and if you related to this, why not floss while you watch television?
